(FORGET THE ) NEUTRAL COLOURS FOR THE HOUSE

Will you carry on reading if I say forget what you've learnt about neutrals? Is your house beige, magnolia and white? If it is and you are loving it, then great, but if you are sick of it, then you are going to love this!

Welcome to my blog post about neutrals. Thank you for dropping by and I hope you will find this post useful. As you know I've had a bit of a love hate relationship with colour and I'm still learning to embrace them all, but my recent discovery about neutrals has really changed my view over how I'm decorating houses these days.

If I only knew what I know now, our house would probably look very different. I'm not saying I'm not happy with my neutral choices,I still love the classic black, white, grey, brown with a touch of blue combo, I'm only saying I would have been brave enough to go for something different, something bold!

Colour fan decks

I've always found colour fan decks fascinating ( I mean who knew there are so many colours out there?) and I saw them as something very special, only designers can have. And since now I'm a designer too, I've decided to invest in one and I'm telling you, when it arrived, it was like Christmas! I was walking round the house with it, spent days examining the colours and I'm not kidding, I took it up to bed with me... well, kept it on the bedside table, so when I wake up, I can look at it again! The more I looked at them the more I fell in love, but today's post isn't about all those lovely colours, it's about the neutrals! So this fan has got a whole section dedicated to neutrals and when I've looked at them, I just couldn't believe the number of swatches laying in front of my eyes.

To many people, neutral just means without color. We've been told to keep our houses neutral, beige, magnolia, white, so that's that isn't then? Neutrals such as beige, taupe, the 50 shades of grey, black and the unbelievable plethora of whites are all sneakily appearing to be without color, but in reality, they all have some undertones, so then we start putting them into warm (with red, orange, yellow undertones) and cool (with green, blue, violet undertones) categories. And I was OK with some undertones, but what this colour fan was showing me, was a bit more! In fact a lot more! So much more, that I've actually started picking out colours and kept saying: " Well if this is neutral, it should go with this lime green", or "I bet it doesn't work with this shade of pink", and I was wrong, IT JUST WORKED WITH EVERYTHING! (Please tell me that you see colours in here too! I mean there are swatches that to me are just blue or purple...)

I realise, this may have been a light-bulb moment for me and you may have known about all these neutrals, but if you didn't then here is a photo with my neutrals section from my Dulux fan deck.

Neutral colours of 2020

According to a study, sage green have been named as neutral for 2020 by 44 percent of designers polled, and 42 percent said navy blue. Since I'm a big fan of blue, this officially makes my house free of colour!

I always say that I don't follow trends because I believe in classic schemes or if not classic then it has to be very much personalised! Please don't pick up the pink cushions, just because they are trendy now, but you actually can't stand them and equally, if blue doesn't speak to you despite of it being a huge classic, don't go for it! Nowadays, creating something that you really love, is really simple and it's unbelievably cheap too! Or it can be mega expensive if that floats your boat! Either way, whatever you do, do it PiriStyle... aka do what makes you happy!
